Fibreglass as we know it was patented in 1936 under the brand Fiberglas by Owens-Corning. That same year, polyester resin was patented by DuPont.

It was found that the fibreglass could be reinforced with the resin to make a very strong, sturdy composite. The first boat made of fibreglass impregnated with polyester resin was built in 1942 and that is still how most boats are built today.

For added durability and style, the fibreglass hull is covered in a gel coat that gives it its slick, shiny appearance. This gel coat is subject to oxidation but this can be prevented with regular maintenance.
